Assignment
This Week’s Reading
Handbook: Chapter 12, 14, 61
Assignment: Brief Assignment 4
Objective: To demonstrate your ability to gather, filter, and evaluate source material for your literature review
Purpose: You will need to locate and evaluate the sources you plan to use in your literature review draft 1.1; this assignment will help you become more proficient at doing so.
Description: To complete this assignment, prepare an annotated bibliography. Each entry in an annotated bibliography consists of two elements: an initial citation in MLA format (see Ch. 18 of your ehandbook) and a 100 – 150 word evaluation of each source, in which you will evaluate the relevance, accuracy and quality of the source. The focus of your annotations should be on evaluating the quality of the sources, but your evaluation may also include a brief summary of key points of each source’s content.  Your bibliography should contain a minimum of six annotated entries.  Your sources should be scholarly articles which you locate through the TTU library databases.
HW:
1. Review Mary Molina's Annotated Bibliography and Rosalyn Simpson's Revised Lit Review (Draft 1.2) (Pg. 681).
2. Topic Proposal - Due by Friday, Feb. 4 at 11:59 p.m.

Assignment: Brief Assignment 3

Purpose:  To demonstrate your ability to synthesize source material.

Description: This assignment will help you prepare for the initial draft of the literature review. To complete this assignment, you will need to write a thesis-driven synthesis of three articles. In other words you will want to identify a common theme or idea that you see running through each article and focus on how each article develops or contributes to the theme.

We have selected the following articles from your textbook for this assignment:

                * “Why a Global Language?” (David Crystal) p. 350-359

                * “What Global Language?” (Barbara Wallraff) p. 360-371

                * “Not the Queen’s English” (Carla Power) p. 371-375

 1) Read each article through once so that you understand its scope and the author’s argument.

 2) As you begin to read through each article again, note common themes and ideas. What are the things these authors agree and disagree about?  (Hint: You may find it helpful to use an organizational tool such as a Venn diagram.)

 3) Create a working thesis statement based on one common theme or idea that runs through all three articles (a statement that will tie all three articles together in some way).  There will be several possible common themes or ideas for you to choose from.  Pick the one that you can develop in the most detail.

 4) Then, write an essay which summarizes and synthesizes these articles.  In other words, describe the common theme, explain how each author develops the common theme, and then explain how each article relates to the others.  What are their similarities and differences?  Why are these similarities and differences important to the theme which you are examining?

 Length:  400 ‐ 600 words
Format: MLA style for internal citations and works cited.

7. Review BA3 Scoring Guide
Scoring Guide:

-        Review Brief Assignment 2 - Analysis of Literature Reviews
Purpose: To demonstrate your ability to understand what a literature review is and to analyze its structure
Description: Many writers, in the academic setting and beyond, review previous research as part of their own writing. They do this in the form of a specialized type of document often referred to as a literature review. The format or structure of a literature review can differ across academic disciplines and rhetorical situations. However, the overall objective of a literature review remains the same: to provide a “critical discussion, showing insight and an awareness of differing arguments, theories and approaches on a specific topic” (UCE Birmingham web site, par. 2). Your task for this assignment is to analyze a literature review in preparation for writing your own in draft 1.1. Your analysis should focus on the structure of the review and how that structure demonstrates the author’s purpose for writing it. Keep in mind that this type of writing may be called a literature review, an analytical literature review, a research review, or simply a review essay. Different fields have different names for an essay that reviews scholarship or research on a topic.
We have selected literature reviews from various genres. Choose one of the following literature reviews to analyze:
--Lead Exposure and Cardiovascular Disease: A Systematic Review
--(Extraordinary) Bodies of Knowledge: Recent Scholarship in American Disability History
--Parental Abduction: A Review of the Literature
--Role of Television in Childhood Obesity Prevention
These literature reviews are available at http://english.ttu.edu/lang/compfa10/fall_lit_reviews.asp.

To complete the assignment, write a 400-600 word essay in which you analyze the organization of the literature review which you have chosen from the list above.  Your analysis should consider the author’s purpose for conducting the review, the way the author has grouped the research on similar topics, and the kinds of information which the author provides about the sources and their authors.  In addition, your analysis should consider the rhetorical effect of the author’s decisions.  You should cite examples from the literature review to illustrate your points.  Your essay should be in MLA format.  You must also include the author and title of the literature review in your introduction.

Note: The focus of this analysis is not so much on what is being said (content) but on the structure of the review.

Brief Assignment One
Objective: To identify potential weaknesses in grammar and mechanics for further study this semester
Purpose: Often, students realize that they have trouble with grammar and mechanics, but find it hard to learn to avoid those errors because they aren’t even sure what they are. This assignment first requires you to take the pre-semester diagnostic at Prep-U, located in the Bedford Student Center: http://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/ttu/. After completing the diagnostic, you need to write a brief reflection about your score and submit that reflection to Raider Writer.
Description: To receive full credit for this assignment, you must take the pre-semester diagnostic, and then answer the following in a reflective paragraph:
  • Where and when did you take ENGL1301? What was your grade in the course? If you took 1301 at Tech, what were your pre- and post-diagnostic scores?
  • What was your score on the pre-diagnostic for 1302?
  • Was it higher or lower than you expected?
  • After reviewing your results, and based on your previous writing experiences, including your experience in ENGL 1301, if applicable, which particular grammar elements would you like to focus on this semester?
  •  What other issues with your writing do you believe you still need to focus on at this point?
Each question is worth 20 points, so be sure to answer all of them completely.
